Media: the new cooking teachers
Catalan and /or Spanish cooking is fashionable but our eating habits have changed in the last years. Two reasons could explain why. On the one hand, both women and men work full-time, on the other hand our knowledge about healthy eating is poor. Many food enterprises have taken advantage of these facts offering us a huge number of fast food products. As we do not have much time and much feel like cooking, we use more and more ready-prepared food, which means that we eat less and less traditional dishes, that we do not practice the culinary heritage of our parents, and that we leave our health unattended.
Despite of this worrying situation, two other phenomena have recently appeared, which fortunately are changing some bad eating habits. It is about TV cooking programs and the influence of other cultures. The media promote well-known cookers as a point of reference (e.g. Karlos Arguiñano, Isma Prados, Jamie Oliver) to teach us to cook easily, to identify the best healthy products, to enjoy cooking and to take pleasure in eating. After some weeks watching these TV programs, people feel able to prepare at least one of the recipes. Therefore, gradually we recover good habits and besides learning about food and health, we know foreign cooking.
As a conclusion, we can say that TV takes on an educational role with cooking programs.
